Faculty Fellows Program

FYRE Ignite Ceremony

An important component of our ongoing efforts to improve the undergraduate experience at NMSU is our Faculty Fellows Program within the Housing and Residential Life unit.  Currently, we still have openings for many of the 29 Faculty Fellows.  I am writing to alert you to these openings and encourage faculty members to consider becoming a Faculty Fellow.

Thirteen of the Faculty Fellow positions are in the Upperclassmen Experience Program (S’More).  Sixteen of the Faculty Fellow positions are in the First-Year Residential Experience Program (FYRE).  Faculty Fellows receive an annual stipend of $1,500 for about 25 hours of effort each semester.  Housing and Residential Life has developed a website with more information.

The major responsibilities of faculty fellows are to: work with their assigned community in a residence hall or set of apartments/houses (about 100 students); attend Crimson kick-off or Community kick-off events; attend RA training in early August; meet every couple of weeks with your RA and/or assigned community; plan and co-execute a couple of events in the community during the academic year; and, serve as a mentor to residents in your community.

There is also an opening for a FYRE Faculty-in-Residence in Garcia Hall.  The Faculty-in-Residence lives in a rent free two-bedroom apartment in Garcia Hall and receives a staff meal plan.  The Faculty in Residence helps coordinate the Faculty Fellows program and encourages the formation of faculty connections to the residence halls.  He or she will frequently eat dinner with student residents and RAs, help train staff teams and connect them with campus resources, and plan enjoyable and academically-oriented events and activities. Learn about the FiR.

One of the distinguishing characteristics of our faculty is a strong commitment to making lasting connections with our students. The Faculty Fellows and Faculty-in-Residence Programs provide new ways of making these lasting connections.  Please contact Housing and Residential Life Director Matt Crouse at mcrouse@nmsu.edu or 575-646-3849 to play a vital role in the student experience at NMSU.
